Features: Scottish Clan Genealogy

This section contains the early genealogy and history of most of the major Highland clans of Scotland, transcribed from The Scottish Clans and Their Tartans, by James Grant, 10th edition, published 1906 by W. & A. K. Johnstone, Limited, Edinburgh. Annotations of archaic terms and abbreviations have been made by the Webmaster; paragraph breaks have been added for ease of reading.

While many of these articles read similar to "William, succeeded by his son William, who was succeeded by his son William, who was succeeded by his son, yet another William" etc. many also contain tales that make interesting reading:

There's brave Gillies MacBean, standing 6'4" with his back against a stone wall at the Battle of Culloden, bravely taking down his assailants with a broadsword until he was surrounded, outnumbered, and slain; Helen, the beautiful daughter of Lachlan Gunn who was stolen away on her wedding day by Dugald Keith and taken to his lands where she threw herself off the tower of Ackergill Castle; and the infant son of Gilliegorm - chief of the Logans, who was killed at the hands of the Frasers - supposedly mutilated at birth to quell any aspirations he might have of taking up clan leadership in the future.

If you are looking for tales of true love and romance in the Scottish Highlands of the past, you will not find it in these pages.

Many battles are mentioned only by name in the articles, without further details. Brief summaries of the battles are annotated and footnoted on the pages where they appear. All of these summaries, including recommended further reading, have been compiled on the Selected Battles Fought by Scottish Highland Clans page to aid anyone who may be constructing a timeline of their family's involvement in these historical events.
