NOTE: There are two distinctly different - and vastly contradictory - theories about Penelope Van Princis.
The first, most widely known and generally accepted, theory is this: Penelope Van Princis and her husband John Kent sailed from Amsterdam in the Netherlands to New Amsterdam, a Dutch settlement at the southern tip of Manhattan Island (present day New York.) As they approached their destination, the ship wrecked near Sandy Hook. The survivors decided to walk to New Amsterdam, but John Kent, who'd been ill during the voyage, stayed behind on shore with his wife Penelope to await help, which would be sent back once the survivors reached New Amsterdam. Natives found the young couple, killed John and scalped Penelope, leaving her for dead. Days later a kindly Native found her, took her to his village, and nursed her back to health. He then took her New Amsterdam where he claimed a reward for returning Penelope to her people. There, Penelope met and married Englishman Richard Stout, and lived (for a long, long time) happily ever after.
The second theory, is this: Penelope Prince was born in Stepney, near London, England in 1629, to Lawrence Prince, a tailor, and the widowed Mary Kilburn (maiden name unknown). Penelope was baptized at St Dunstan's on 20 Sept 1629; her father died in 1630. In 1644 there is a record of Penelope Prince who arrived in Colonial Maryland and migrated to Kent Island, Maryland in the Chesapeake Bay, under indenture by Robert Vaughn. Vaughn had business interests connecting him to that part of London, as well as to the Chesapeake Bay.
Penelope Prince was an indentured servant at the home of William and Frances Cox on Kent Island from 1644 to 1646. She ran away during during a time of civil unrest, which was attested to by Robert Vaughn in 1656. Penelope Prince next appears in the historical records of Gravesend Colony, one of the original towns in the Dutch colony of New Netherland (present day Brooklyn, New York), where she met and married Englishman Richard Stout, and lived (for a long, long time) happily ever after.
It's not a far jump from Van Princis to Vaughn-Prince or from John Kent to Kent Island. On the other hand, Kent Island, Maryland is a very far jump to the Gravesend Colony in New York.
The legend of Penelope Van Princis developed over the centuries, and has been studied and dissected exhaustively over the past decade. By all accounts, she lived to over 100 years old. While I'm more inclined to believe the story of a runaway indentured servant from London over a shipwrecked, mutilated Dutchwoman, I've used the more accepted Van Princis surname here, as searching for her led me to this conclusion/confusion.
