Features: Tartan Finder

Welcome to the Tartan Finder at Plaidwerx. This list serves as a method of identifying tartans relating to surnames found in Scottish historical records. In addition to commonly known family or clan tartans and their district of residence and activity, there are thousands of lesser known surnames listed.

Where there is no known clan affiliation or association a district tartan is listed, representing either the place where the name was earliest recorded in Scotland, and/or location where commonly found in censuses through the 1881 Census. In the case of common surnames several clans and districts may be listed.

In my personal genealogy, I've identified over a dozen clan tartans, and several district tartans that I can choose from to embrace my Scottish heritage. Unless you have an unusual last name, you will probably have options. Remember, it just takes one ancestor to make you a member of a clan.

The Tartan Finder is a work in progress, with over 5000 surnames at present, and thousands more to add over time.
