Edinburghshire, or the County of Edinburgh, was officially renamed Midlothian in 1947.
The City of Edinburgh, was originally the county town of Edinburghshire, but retained its own judicial rights, separate from the shire/county. The City was one of four "Counties of City" from 1889-1975 (along with Aberdeen, Dundee, and Glasgow), and became an autonomous council in 1996.
