In the year 563 St Columba came to this island, then called I or Hi, and here he founded his monastery. In later times Icholumkill formed a parish, with its church dedicated to St Ronan. Early in the seventeenth century the three parishes of Kilfinichen, Kilvicheoan, and Icholumkill were united. In 1828 a parliamentary chapel was built in Iona. On 11 Jun 1845 the parish of Iona was disjoined from Kilfinichen and Kilvicheoan.
